Open Letter... (3.12.25)

3 December 2025|2025 posts

Dear readers who are therapists,

Along with Dr Nash Popovic, I have written an open letter to the BACP expressing concern at the encroachment of political activism into definitions of “best practice”. When activism enters the consulting room, the neutral, client-centred space that is the beating heart of therapy is put at risk.

We believe this matters deeply – and we are not alone. The letter has already been signed by lots of people, including several widely respected and well-known figures in the UK therapy world. You would be in good company.

You do not need to be a BACP member to add your name – only a qualified therapist (or trainee on a recognised programme).

We completely understand that some therapists feel unable to sign publicly, even when they share the concerns. Some have told us so privately. That reluctance itself is a symptom of the chilling effect we are highlighting, and it is something we will also raise (with full confidence assured) with the BACP.

Please see the covering note sent out below, along with the link to read the letter and sign.

With all good wishes,

Steve

Dear colleagues,

Like many of you, we have become concerned that the BACP is increasingly treating social-justice frameworks as essential for ethical practice.  We have written a short, constructive Open Letter asking the BACP to reaffirm commitment to ideological neutralitytheoretical pluralism, and the client’s right to their own frame of reference.    Therapy must never be the enforcement arm of any particular social ideology.

Please join us - it takes two minutes to read and, if you agree, to add your name as a co-signatory:  https://forms.gle/JdaUZSosKodzVz4UA

With best wishes,

Steve Perkins & Nash Popovic
